Battenkill Roubaix 2009

Last spring I went up to Cambridge, NY to race in the 2009 Battenkill Roubaix which is considered to be the biggest single day race in the United States. I raced in the Cat 4 field and finished 21st, 2 minutes behind the winner. I took some photographs on my downtown of this beautiful small town in upstate New York.

Yatika is a painter that comes from a native american background, who moved to NY to pursue his painting career. I met him threw the messenger scene and we have kept in touch to this day. Like me, he is currently not working as a messenger and concentrating on his art. He is also a rider in a film I am working on called EMPIRE.

Ray Parish a professor at UTEP let us view his art and showed us around his gallery and workshop. We ran into Mr. Parish after going of route, which was probably the best thing that could happen. 15 days in Texas...

Texas was awesome! Dallas was fun, Austin was a really good time and cannot wait until I go back. Went to San Antonios river walk at night which was really nice to finally see. After San An we headed west on 90 and ran into a couple of cool small towns. First we spot in Sanderson, which i liked because it was an old railroad town. It is located in a valley and it had a really nice small town feel with a sweet little cafe. In Marathon, we met this awesome pilot/artist whos name is Gill. He had amazing architecture. Marfa was cool, but i expect more then what I saw. Everything being closed did not help. A couple of us went to this awesome house party which was a lot of fun. The hose played some salsa and merengue. Van Horn and Fort Hancock followed. Both were pretty uneventful although on the way to Van Horn I did see the Prada store in the middle of nowhere. El paso was a cool city which was a while away from the Border. I went to check that out and took some pictures of the wall aka "the fence". I also met oscar who hooked me up with the quickstep world champion jersey. Also ate at this pretty good pizza place which was the best pizza I had outside of NYC.

The tour started and now it is done. Heres a briefing on the tour. 6pts for 1st place, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th and 1 for 5th. 14 stages. 1st person to get to the truck/campground/hotel wins. There were a couple of sprint finishes which were fun. At one point I was in the lead and then I took a sag day after Austin. I was in no shape to ride. There was a little controversy on the way to Marfa. The two riders who won left 20min or so before myself or everyone else. I thought it was BS and they should of gotten there points taken away, but it did not happen. That would of put me at a tie entering El paso which I probably would of won or came in 2nd but not to the leader. I ended up getting second in El paso to Dan from Canada. This was the 1st time I got beat on a sprint. As far as climbs, I never got dropped the whole tour.

So I am in Texas and have not had a lot of time to upload pictures. So far Texas is going good besides the rough roads. The heat is not that bad as i thought it would be. I am going to be in Texas for 15 days, which is 30% of this trip. Right now I am in Marathon. Last night I was in awesome Samderson. It was a very photogenic town. There was this one place called Roundhouse Cafe which i ate at 3 times yesterday and once again this morning. As far as the Tour de Texas, I am currently in 2nd behind bennett. I had to stars in a row until today. I am 5pts behind him, so I will look to cut the lead down tomorrow.

So i have not really had time to upload any photos. The trip is going good, with a few exceptions that are beyond my control. I am in Uvalde, Tx getting ready to leave the hotel and Time Trial to the campsite which is about 42miles away. I am currently in second or third in the "tour de texas" so i need these points. As far as the other previous cities, Austin was amazing, Dallas was a lot of fun and San Antonio was very old world looking with a modern twist. Well enjoy the video and i will upload soon.

In the SOUTH!

I have never been through this next 3 states. I cannot say that i was looking forward to Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas, but it was a good experience. Southerners are very nice and friendly people. I got money from this lady in Guin, Alabama although also in Alabama one of my friends got fucked with and almost pushed of the road. Car lost control and went into a ditch. The car was totaled and passenger was alright. She was "ok" just mentally rattled. The big cities like Little Rock, Birmingham and Memphis. I managed to pick up a couple of wins along the way bringing my total up to 6. Things in Mississippi were very repetitive. Arkansas was the better one of the three although Alabama was the best visually. Well here are some pictures. Ill update again before i hit Austin. Enjoy.

Since last time ive posted we have been through south carolina and georgia. I am feeling better and have gave some of the guys a run for there money. we have been racing to destinations and passing a long a ring for the champion of the day. just making things competitive amongst the group i guess to make the ride a little bit more exciting. camping is fun but it does not compare to staying in a hotel. Spent the 4th in Charlotte and that was a blast. I do not remember most of the night. ATL was cool. I met up with Matt who is a local messenger and he showed me around. I also got a chance to get a beer with my uncle. Track bike is still holding up. I recently ordered bullhorns so well see what happens. I am switching from road drops to risers at the moment and went back to riding 49x17. I feel like i can climb and descend better. Next state on the map is Alabama...

I am past philly and we have gone through baltimore, DC, richmond, charlotte and raleigh. Still on the track bike in back roads getting chased by dogs and eating in waffle houses. so far so good. I dont really feel as tired as i would. now i am starting to agree with my decision to bring my track bike. check out some pictures.

so far so good. the hotels have been good. DC was a bit ghetto. nice rollers in MD. i managed to hit 44.6 in a back road in maryland and 40.6 toward a dam which was pretty scary. i need my MTB's!

so i am taking a break from posting my old work because something amazing came up. i am one of 42 people who got selected on a promotional tour to ride across the US of A. 42 below vodka is the company that i am representing and besides my current stomach ache, it has been great! i am going on the southern route with 21 other riders and i have a couple of friends going on the northern route. so far we have hit; NJ PA MD and currently we are in VA very close to NC. to be more specific we are in South Hill, VA. i will be uploading pictures as i go along and you can also follow my progress on my twitter, on the 42 below twitter and on the actual 42 below website.

Last summer I wanted to shoot a series on women who rode their bikes. I did not really get going with this project, but I did shoot portraits of alleycat racers who raced in the Hellcat race. I shot film, medium format. The race was women only and it took place in New York city. Dagga got 1st place in the race.
